Communal bins

You'll have a communal bin if you live in a:

  • block of flats
  • flat above a shop
  • communal home (house of multiple occupation)

Your household will have three recycling bins (one for glass, plastic and tins, one for paper and cardboard, and one for food waste) plus a refuse bin for non-recyclable items.

Recycling (food)

Use your grey kitchen caddy for any raw or cooked leftover food or food waste. When you are ready, empty the contents into the outside communal food waste bin, which is either a large or a small black and orange container, depending on the size of your building. It is clearly marked with a orange sticker which also has a reminder of what can go in the bin.

The items that can or cannot go in this bin are the same as the food waste bin for the majority of households.

Recycling (glass, plastic and tins)

Your communal recycling bin for glass, plastic or tin is a wheelie bin. It is clearly marked with a brown sticker which also has a reminder of what can go in the bin.

The items that can or cannot go in this bin are the same as the brown recycling bin for the majority of households.

Recycling (paper and cardboard)

Your communal recycling bin for paper and cardboard is either a large container or a wheelie bin, depending on the size of your building. It is clearly marked with a green sticker which also has a reminder of what can go in the bin.

The items that can or cannot go in this bin are the same as the green box for the majority of households.

Refuse

Your communal refuse bin is either a large container or a wheelie bin, depending on the size of your building. It is clearly marked with a light green sticker which also has a reminder of what can go in the bin.

The items that can or cannot go in this bin are the same as the green refuse bin for the majority of households.
